Chapter 17

Saturday, April 11th

Grayson had played in the TD Garden Arena a few times in his career, and it was always packed. Today was no exception. Even though it wasn’t a night game, Boston was serious about hockey, and there didn’t appear to be a single empty seat. His team was in high spirits from a string of wins, but they all knew to take the Bruins seriously. So far in the standings, the Bs were the Eastern team to beat, and this could easily be a Stanley Cup preview.

The Sinners warmed up, circling around their end, taking shots on Reese. Grayson skated off to the boards, dropped his stick in front of him, and eased into a butterfly stretch, loosening up his inner thigh muscles. Got a good workout last night. The thought made him grin because attached to it was the image of prim and proper Olivia writhing in ecstasy beneath him.

“What?”

“Huh?” To his right, Cole was staring at him expectantly.

“You had this look like you found a birthday present early and it was exactly what you wanted.”

“Oh…” It was pretty fitting description, so he nodded.

“Well, what was it?”

“I’ll tell you when you’re old enough, kid.”

Cole laughed and shook his head, but he let it go.

Good. The last thing Grayson needed was team gossip, and dudes talked. Whether it was the comfortable, accepting atmosphere that encouraged them or morbid curiosity, you could trust that if one teammate knew, they all would. But Cole had a good head on his shoulders and seemed way more mature than most of the others.

The rest of the pre-game stuff went by quickly, and soon the starting line-up was standing along the neutral zone lines, holding their helmets and shifting skate to skate while Rene Rancourt sang the U.S. anthem. Grayson watched from the bench as Cole took the first face-off. The kid had speed and almost supernatural vision to see where the puck was going to go before anyone laid a stick on it. He won the draw, got it to his winger, and took off for Boston’s end. It was one thing to be out there, executing the plays they worked on in practice, but watching it was even more impressive.

Nealy was like a choreographic wizard, and they were all her manic marionettes, moving in perfect synchrony. Crisp, tape-to-tape passes from unexpected angles kept the Bruins guessing and kept them from defending. Less than two minutes in, and Cole lit the lamp to near deafening boos from the crowd. The starting lineup skated along the bench, and those seated all bumped gloves as they went by.

Nealy tapped his shoulder, the signal that he was up, and Grayson hopped over the half wall and took his place center ice. Everyone burst into motion as soon as the puck dropped, but this time it ended up in the Sinners’ end. One of the Bruins made the mistake of edging into Reese’s crease, which the goalie defended like it was his child. Reese shoved the guy, who then shoved him back, and the game halted.
